Stand Fitter

Support rolling mill operations, focusing on the preparation of stands and cassettes. Perform routine assembly, disassembly, and maintenance activities, including fault diagnosis and repair of damaged or defective components in stands, cassettes, and related equipment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES  

• Perform fitting, assembly, and dismantling of mill stands according to daily rolling and maintenance plans. 
• Coordinate with production and roll shop teams to ensure stand and cassette readiness before campaign start-up. 
• Support supervisors in maintaining rolling continuity and minimizing stoppages caused by stand or cassette issues 
• Assemble and align roll chocks, bearings, and couplings within specified tolerances as per setup sheets. 
• Ensure correct gap settings, roll pass alignment, and stand centering to maintain bar dimensional accuracy. 
• Perform visual checks and confirm proper lubrication and water supply connections before mill operation. 
• Minimize downtime by carrying out quick and accurate stand changeovers during size changes
• Participate in stand modification or trial programs aimed at improving pass design, cooling efficiency, or roll life. 
• Provide feedback on chock performance, roll wear patterns, and bearing conditions to enhance reliability. 
• Suggest practical improvements to reduce setup time and increase alignment accuracy.
• Identify issues such as vibration, misalignment, or uneven wear and apply corrective actions promptly. 
• Adjust stand alignment and roll gap based on bar feedback during trial passes. 
• Report major abnormalities to supervisors with clear and accurate observations.
• Follow all safety standards during stand handling, lifting, and alignment activities. 
• Use proper PPE and maintain safe working practices around rotating and heavy equipment. 
• Report near misses, oil leaks, and unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
• Inspect and maintain chocks, bearings, and couplings for wear, damage, and proper lubrication. 
• Support breakdown repairs, mill shutdowns, and stand overhauls to ensure equipment reliability. 
• Keep stands, tools, and work areas clean, organized, and properly stored in line with 5S standards.  

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE

• Required Qualifications: 

- Vocational/Technical Certification or Diploma in Fields such as Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Maintenance, Metallurgy or related technical fields.

• Preferred Experience: 

- Vocational/Technical Certificate: Minimum 5 years of experience as a Stand Fitter, Roll Shop Technician, or Mechanical Fitter in a bar mill or similar long-product rolling mill. 
- Diploma: Minimum 3 years of experience as a Stand Fitter, Roll Shop Technician, or Mechanical Fitter in a bar mill or similar long-product rolling mill. 
- Relevant Experience may include the following:
o Experience in continuous production lines, high-temperature environments, and shift-based mill operations. 
o Experience in stand and cassette preparation, shutdown maintenance, overhauls, and repair activities for mill stands and related mechanical components
